Buying an Isle of Man number plate

Buying a Manx registration privately is straightforward when both sides know what to check. This guide covers how it works on Plate Circle.

1. Check the seller

On Plate Circle, sellers are identity checked and we review ownership evidence before a listing goes live. Even so, ask the seller for the document that shows their entitlement to the registration before you agree a price.

2. Agree the deal in the open

Make offers through the plate page so there is a written record. On an accepted offer, the buyer pays a 3% buyer's premium, and we release contact details so you can complete directly.

3. Protect the payment

Plate Circle never holds your money. For higher-value Manx plates, consider an independent escrow service so funds move only when the paperwork does.

4. Confirm the Manx transfer steps

Manx transfers are handled by the Isle of Man Department of Infrastructure, not the DVLA, and we are still confirming the exact current process. Do not send money on the assumption a UK-style V750/V778 applies. See our transfer guide for what we know so far.
