Trust And Safety
Plate Circle is designed to make the UK private number plate market clearer, more transparent and easier to research. Every plate can have one master page combining marketplace status, spotted history, valuation context, sales history, auction data and community knowledge where available. This helps buyers and sellers see more context before proceeding. However, private number plate transactions still carry risk, especially when payment and DVLA transfer steps are handled directly between parties. This page explains how Plate Circle supports safer transactions, what users should check, and how independent escrow can add protection on higher-value sales.
A more transparent plate record
Every registration on Plate Circle is designed to have one permanent master page. That page can bring together listing details, sightings, sales history, auction records, valuation context and community knowledge.
Seller checks at a glance
Every seller on Plate Circle must complete a Stripe Identity check before any of their listings can go live. For each listing, the seller also uploads a redacted V750, V778 or V5C document, which a Plate Circle moderator reviews before the listing is published.
- Seller identity verified: the seller has completed a Stripe Identity check. This is the only trust badge we show on a listing.
- Document evidence supplied and reviewed: for every listing, the seller uploads a redacted V750, V778 or V5C and a Plate Circle moderator reviews it before the listing goes live. We deliberately don't show this as a per-listing badge, because we don't want it to read as a Plate Circle endorsement of ownership of that specific plate.
These checks help us keep clearly fraudulent listings off the marketplace, but they are not a guarantee of ownership and they do not guarantee that DVLA will approve a transfer. Buyers should always follow the completing-safely steps before releasing funds.
Buyer safety
- check the seller's details and the evidence shown on the listing
- ask for any additional proof of entitlement you need
- understand whether the plate is on a vehicle, V750 or V778
- avoid sending large sums without confidence in the seller and transfer route
- for higher-value plates, agree with the seller to complete through an independent escrow provider
Seller safety
- be clear about what you own
- provide accurate information about transfer status
- avoid releasing entitlement before agreed funds are received
- keep records of communications and transfer steps
- on higher-value sales, agree with the buyer to complete through an independent escrow provider
Sale introduced stage
After the buyer has paid the Plate Circle buyer's premium, buyer and seller details are exchanged and the sale is then completed between the parties, with Plate Circle supporting the DVLA transfer.
Completing safely on higher-value sales
For higher-value purchases, buyer and seller can agree to complete through an independent escrow provider. Funds are held by a regulated third party and released to the seller only once the registration has been transferred. Plate Circle does not hold buyer funds or guarantee ownership.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Plate Circle guarantee every number plate?
- No. Plate Circle checks every seller's identity via Stripe and reviews the supporting documents they upload, but this is not a guarantee of ownership or that DVLA will approve a transfer. Buyers should make their own checks before completing a purchase.
- What does the 'Seller identity verified' badge mean?
- 'Seller identity verified' means the seller has completed a Stripe Identity check, so we have confirmed who they are. It does not prove the seller still owns the plate at the moment of sale. We also review the redacted V750, V778 or V5C document each seller supplies for each listing before it goes live, but we deliberately don't show this as a per-listing badge because we don't want it to read as a Plate Circle endorsement of that plate's ownership.
- What happens after a sale is introduced?
- Once the buyer has paid the buyer's premium, contact details are exchanged so buyer and seller can complete the sale and the DVLA transfer. Plate Circle guides both sides through each step.
- How can buyers reduce risk on higher-value plates?
- Sellers verify their phone number and complete an identity check before they can list. For higher-value purchases, buyer and seller can agree to complete through an independent escrow provider, so the buyer's funds are held by a regulated third party and released to the seller only once the transfer is confirmed.
