Retaining an Isle of Man number plate

In the UK, retention means taking a registration off a vehicle and holding it on a V778 document. The Isle of Man runs its own system, so UK retention rules and documents do not apply to Manx registrations.

Why this matters when buying

If a seller describes a Manx plate as "on retention", ask exactly what document they hold and which authority issued it. A UK V778 cannot hold a Manx registration.
