What a current-style plate is

The format is two letters, a two-digit age identifier, then three letters — for example AB51 CDE. The first two letters are a regional code; the two numbers show when the plate was issued (March and September each get their own identifier); and the final three letters are yours to choose. Because they're still issued in huge numbers, current-style plates are the cheapest way to put a personal registration on a car.
