How selling works

1.Create your listing
Enter your registration and asking price in the form above. Add a short description if you want to explain what makes the plate work, whether that is initials, a name, a word or a milestone. Listings are free.
2.Verify who you are
We run an identity check before your listing goes live. This confirms who a seller is, which gives buyers confidence they are dealing with a real person. It does not verify ownership of the plate, and we are clear with buyers about that distinction.
3.Agree a sale directly
Interested buyers contact you through the platform. You negotiate the price yourself and agree terms directly, exactly as you would in a private sale. There is no dealer setting the price or taking a cut.
4.Complete the transfer
Once you have agreed a sale, follow our completing safely steps. The registration moves through the DVLA process in the normal way, whether it is held on retention or currently assigned to a vehicle.

How much does it cost to sell a number plate on Plate Circle?
Listing is free for up to five plates. There is no commission on your sale and no fee taken from what you agree. Buyers pay a 3% Buyer's Premium on top of the agreed price. Premium listings are available at £4.95 per month per listing if you want extra visibility.
Can I sell a plate that is still on my car?
Yes. You can list a registration whether it is assigned to a vehicle or held on retention. You will need to start the DVLA retention process before the registration can move to the buyer, and our transfer guide explains each step.
Do I need a V750 or V778 to list?
Not to list. You need the relevant document at the point of transfer, a V778 retention certificate if the plate is on retention, or a V750 certificate of entitlement if it has not yet been assigned. Never send a photo or scan of either document to anyone until a sale is properly agreed.
How long does it take to sell?
It depends entirely on the plate. Short dateless registrations, clean initials and recognisable names tend to move fastest. Asking price is the single biggest factor, which is why a valuation before you list is worth the minute it takes.
How do buyers contact me?
Through Plate Circle. Enquiries come to you and you respond directly. You negotiate the price and terms yourself.
Can I change my asking price after listing?
Yes. You can edit your asking price and description at any time from your account.
What if my plate does not sell?
There is no cost and no time limit on a free listing. You can adjust the price, upgrade to Premium for more visibility, or request a cash offer if you would rather sell quickly.
Is Plate Circle a dealer?
No. Plate Circle is a marketplace. Buyers and sellers agree the price between themselves. We do buy a small number of plates directly through our cash offer route, but that is separate from the marketplace and entirely optional.
