1 OAU private number plate

1 OAU presents a compelling combination of desirable attributes for UK private number plate collectors and enthusiasts.

Leading the appeal is the presence of the number 1, a universally recognised pinnacle for any initials set. For dateless registrations, number 1 is materially distinct and significantly more sought after than higher numbers. The 1 OAU format pairs this coveted number with three letters, creating a concise and impactful four-character display.

The registration comprises dateless mark U, originally issued in Leeds, and was released to the open market via DVLA auction in 2015. It sold for £4,500 (hammer price). With auction fees, the estimated total paid by the buyer was £5,832. The character count of four is notably short, a widely recognised characteristic that enhances a plate's appeal. Short format plates generally hold stronger desirability, with fewer digits contributing to a cleaner, more memorable registration.

The initials OAU offer potential for personalisation, appealing to individuals seeking a direct match for their moniker or business name. The DVLA's own buyer motivation surveys indicate that personal connections, particularly names and initials, are the leading reason for purchasing a private registration.

This specific registration was first entered into circulation through a DVLA auction in 2015. Historically, dateless registrations, particularly those with a letters-first format, have been recognised for their desirability due to their association with the earliest registration eras, and the DVLA has noted the finite supply, particularly of two-letter registrations paired with a single number, which supports their rarity appeal. The short, standalone nature of 1 OAU aligns with historical trends indicating strong demand for such formats.
