1 VDL private number plate

1 VDL is a distinctive four-character UK number plate. It features a single number followed by three letters, presenting a clean and compact dateless format highly favoured by collectors. As number 1, it holds the pinnacle position for any matching initials it represents, establishing it as a significantly more sought-after option than equivalent plates with higher numbers.

The plate’s format, with its single number at the front, aligns with a visual style associated with the earliest eras of UK registrations. This numbers-first, dateless style offers a timeless aesthetic, free from year identifiers. Such registrations are generally considered to possess considerable collector appeal due to their historical significance and inherent rarity.

As a personalised registration, 1 VDL offers excellent potential for initials. The combination VDL could appeal to individuals or businesses with those initials. The DVLA buyer-motivation survey published in 2019 indicated that personal names or initials were the leading reason for individuals considering a private registration, accounting for 69% of respondents.

1 VDL was released to the open market via DVLA auction in 2021. It sold for £14,070 (hammer price). With auction fees, the estimated total paid by the buyer was £18,066.
