40 PU private number plate

The 40 PU UK private number plate offers a concise, four-character format. Its structure of two numbers followed by two letters, two numbers followed by two letters, presents a clean and memorable appearance. This particular layout is often sought after for its straightforward readability.

With "PU" as the initials, the plate holds potential for personal appeal. While not a designation with immediate widespread name recognition, "PU" initials can be popular with individuals whose surnames or first names begin with these letters. The DVLA's buyer-motivation surveys consistently show that personal connection, particularly through names or initials, is a leading reason for purchasing a private registration, with a vast majority of respondents citing this as their primary driver.

The number 40, positioned at the start of the registration, also contributes to its appeal. Lower numbers within the 10-99 band on dateless plates are generally considered more desirable than higher numbers, and fewer digits overall can create a more streamlined look. Although this specific registration was released to the open market via DVLA auction in 2023, its dateless format holds the clean look associated with dateless registrations from earlier periods. It sold for £5,010 (hammer price). With auction fees, the estimated total paid by the buyer was £6,433.
