5 XVS private number plate

5 XVS is a four-character dateless registration with a single digit followed by three letters. This format was originally issued in the mainland UK between circa 1953 and 1963, prior to the introduction of year-identifying prefixes. Dateless registrations of this nature are now considered cherished, holding a timeless appeal for collectors. The clean, uncluttered look of this early format is a significant draw in itself.

The number 5 at the start of the registration is a distinctive, low-number digit. While not a number 1 plate, single-digit numbers generally carry greater collector interest than their higher-numbered counterparts, and this is a key structural appeal of 5 XVS. The combination of a short format and a low number creates a visually appealing and memorable registration.

The initials XVS present possibilities for personalised ownership. While these initials are considered niche or of lower demand in terms of broad appeal, they may hold specific significance for an individual or family. Broadly speaking, personal names or initials are a primary motivation for purchasing private plates, according to DVLA research.

This registration was first released to the open market via DVLA auction in 2017. It sold for £1,800 (hammer price). With auction fees, the estimated total paid by the buyer was £2,333.
