HSM 1C private number plate

HSM 1C is a five-character suffix registration. The format consists of three letters followed by a number and a letter. This particular style of registration was introduced in 1963 and phased out in 1983.

The number 1 is present in the registration, holding a unique position in collector appeal. While no specific initials reading has been identified, the trio of letters HSM may create personal significance for some. The subsequent single letter C also offers potential for initials-based appeal. This registration format, with a smaller number of digits, contributes to a concise and clean visible sequence.

The suffix registration system was in use from 1963 through to 1983. Earlier iterations of the registration system featured regional codes such as C for West Riding of Yorkshire, H for Middlesex, M for Cheshire, or S for Edinburgh during the 1903 era. Later systems from 1965 onwards also used these letters as part of a suffix year identifier. Additionally, the letters HSM may correlate with regional identifiers used for Glasgow (HS) or Carlisle (SM) in prior systems. The letter C also functions as a memory tag in current style registrations, representing Cymru (Wales).
