VSL 8 private number plate

VSL 8 is a four-character dateless registration. This format, with three letters followed by a single number, has the clean look associated with dateless registrations and is highly sought after by collectors. Its short length contributes to a concise and memorable presentation. The number 8, being a single digit and falling within the 2-9 range, typically holds stronger appeal than higher numbers or multi-digit combinations within its format.

As a dateless registration, VSL 8 does not show a year identifier, offering a timeless appeal. Registrations of this type, particularly those from the earliest periods of UK vehicle registration, are often favoured for their historical significance. The format itself is a classic example of early UK number plate design.

The initials VSL are considered to have mid-market popularity, suggesting a good breadth of potential buyers. While direct name or word readings are not evident, the registration's structure and rarity as a dateless four-character plate provide significant collector appeal. The DVLA auction provenance in 2022 places it within the contemporary market for desirable registrations. It sold for £10,110 (hammer price). With auction fees, the estimated total paid by the buyer was £12,981.
