About first name number plates

A first name plate puts your name — or someone you love's — on a car. It's one of the most popular and personal kinds of private plate, and the good news is that with the right format and a little number-for-letter substitution, far more names are reachable than people expect.

How names map onto plates

Most first names can be spelled on a plate using the letters available plus the odd substitution — a 1 for an I, a 4 for an A, a 5 for an S. Shorter names read most cleanly; longer ones often work best across a modern current-style format. And because Northern Ireland plates always contain an I or a Z, they unlock names that standard plates can't spell — IAN, IVY, LIZ and ZAC among them.
