1 MJ private number plate

The registration 1 MJ is a short dateless plate with one number followed by two letters. It has three characters in total. As a number 1 plate, it holds a pinnacle position for the MJ initials, making it significantly more important than equivalent plates with higher numbers. The short format contributes to its visual appeal and ease of recall.

The letters MJ offer strong initials appeal, estimated to be in the upper quartile of popularity for UK registrations, suggesting a broad audience. This makes it an interesting option for individuals with those initials.

This desirable formatting for dateless plates is associated with the earliest registration era, and its survival adds historic and collector interest. The 1 MJ plate was first released to the open market via DVLA auction in 1991. It sold for £16,000 (hammer price). With auction fees, the estimated total paid by the buyer was £20,240. The historic two-letter code MJ was previously associated with the Luton (Bedford) area.
