117 S private number plate

117 S is a four-character dateless registration. Its short format provides a clean and memorable presentation. Dateless registrations do not show a year identifier, offering the timeless look associated with earlier UK number plates. This particular layout, with three numbers followed by a single letter, has seen consistent buyer interest, reflecting its strong appeal for personal use.

The registration 117 S originally carried an Edinburgh issuing authority. This marks it as originating from Scotland, a detail that may add a layer of appeal for buyers with a connection to that region. This type of dateless plate format, with its numbers-first sequence, is generally less sought-after than comparable letters-first examples, but still holds significant collector interest due to its age and simplicity.

The appeal of 117 S primarily lies in its potential as an initials plate. The single letter S is a strong contender for individuals whose name or surname begins with this letter, aligning with a leading motivation for purchasing private registrations. While no specific name or word readings are obvious, the inherent value of a standalone initial is widely recognised.

This registration was released to the open market via DVLA auction in 2021. It sold for £18,020 (hammer price). With auction fees, the estimated total paid by the buyer was £23,138.
