397 A private number plate

The registration 397 A is a short, four-character dateless private number plate. Its format, three numbers followed by one letter, is a common sight among dateless registrations, and its brevity contributes to a clean visual aesthetic. The number 397 is a standard number, while the single letter A holds potential for buyers seeking a plate to represent their initial.

As a dateless registration, 397 A does not display a year identifier, offering a timeless look. Such registrations were issued before the introduction of the current system featuring regional memory-tag letters and age-identifier numbers. The historic area of London is associated with the letter A as an original issuing code.

The primary appeal of 397 A lies in its potential as a personal initial plate. The letter A is widely recognised and could represent a surname, a first name, or simply be chosen for its personal significance. A DVLA survey published in 2019 indicated that personal connections, particularly names or initials, were the leading motivation for purchasing a private registration. Shorter plates, like this four-character example, tend to be more desirable, according to historical market analysis.

This specific registration was released to the open market via DVLA auction in 2019. It sold for £6,700 (hammer price). With auction fees, the estimated total paid by the buyer was £8,683.
